DatenUS aims to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. We design and test with accessibility in mind from the start.
What we do
- Text alternatives for images and icons, and clear names for every link and button
- A logical heading order and table headers, so screen readers can navigate pages
- Full keyboard access, a visible focus outline, and a "Skip to content" link on every page
- Color contrast of at least 4.5:1 for text, and we never use color alone to show meaning
- Pages that still work when text is enlarged to 200%
- Respect for your device's "reduce motion" setting, and a light or dark mode
Known limitations
Interactive maps can be hard to use with a screen reader. Every map on the Site has the same information available as a text list or table next to it. Some data comes from agencies in formats we cannot fully control, such as linked PDF documents.
