Information we collect
When you browse
- Our own visit counts. We count page views, the page you came from, the type of device and browser, and approximately which state the visit came from. We do not set a cookie for these statistics and they do not include IP addresses. To count unique visitors per day, we combine the IP address and browser type with a random value that changes every day and is deleted after two days, so the result cannot be traced back to you. We also note how long a page stays open and how far it is scrolled, and to tell first visits from return visits your browser keeps one date (the day of your last visit) in its local storage. That date never leaves your device, and we skip it when your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal.
- Approximate location. To show information for your area on the homepage, our network provider (Cloudflare) tells us the city your internet connection is in. We use it only to choose what to show and we do not save it with anything that identifies you.
- Exact location (optional). "Near me" features ask your browser for your location. That location is used inside your browser to sort results and is never sent to or stored on our servers.
- Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand overall traffic. It uses cookies set by Google. We turn off Google signals and ad personalization, and we do not link it to any advertising account. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we do not load Google Analytics at all. You can also use Google's opt-out browser add-on.
- Preferences. We store small settings in your browser, such as light or dark mode, whether you closed a notice, and whether you acknowledged our first-visit notice. These are not used to track you. Every cookie and storage item we use is listed in Cookies and local storage.
- Site search. When you use the search box, we store the words you searched for (in lowercase, without punctuation), the site, the time, how many results we found, any spelling correction we showed and which result you opened, so we can fix misspellings, suggest related searches and improve search. To connect searches made in the same visit (for example, a misspelled search followed by a corrected one), your browser tab creates a random code that lasts until you close the tab; we store only a scrambled version of it that changes every day. Searches are never stored with your IP address, browser details, cookies or account, and the random code is not sent when your browser sends a GPC signal. Searches that look like an email address, phone number, long number, street address or a person's name are stored without their words. Please do not type personal or health information into the search box.
- Access and security logs. When your browser or any other program requests a page or data from the Site, our servers record the IP address, the browser's user agent string, the date and time, the address requested (for health pages, only the section, as explained in Consumer health data), the country of the connection and, when our network provider supplies it, the approximate state and city, the network name registered for the IP address (reverse DNS), the network operator that holds the IP address (its autonomous system number and name, and whether it is a data center), the browser, operating system and device type read from the user agent, and whether the page's script ran. We use these logs only to keep the Site secure and running: to tell people apart from automated programs, to confirm that search engine crawlers are genuine, to block scrapers and attacks, to prevent abuse and to fix problems. They are not used for advertising or to build profiles of visitors, and we never sell or share them. See How long we keep information. Cloudflare, our network provider, also processes this kind of information to deliver and protect the Site.
When you contact us
If you send a message, request a correction or removal, or apply to advertise, we collect what you enter, such as your name, email address, phone number and message, plus the country your connection came from. We use it to reply and to handle your request. Please do not include health information in your message. Payments for advertising are processed by Stripe; we never see or store full card numbers. When you apply to advertise, Stripe also collects your billing address and, if you choose to give it, your business tax ID, and shares them with us for billing and sales tax records. We never ask for a Social Security number.
Our forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to tell people from automated programs. Turnstile checks signals from your browser and device when the form loads and sends us only a pass or fail result. Cloudflare processes this information under its own privacy policy for the purpose of the check.
Newsletter (optional)
When we offer a newsletter and you check the box to receive it, we store your email address and the date you subscribed. Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link. The box is never checked for you.
How we use information
- to run, secure and improve the Site;
- to reply to messages and handle correction, removal and advertising requests;
- to send emails you asked for, such as replies, receipts and the newsletter if you subscribed;
- to send important notices, such as changes to these policies or our Terms of Use;
- to comply with the law and protect our rights.
Who we disclose information to
We use service providers that process information for us under contract and only for our purposes:
- Cloudflare (network, security, file storage, and the Turnstile check on our forms)
- Google (Google Analytics, and Google Search Console, which reports search traffic to us)
- Stripe (advertising payments and sales tax)
- Amazon Web Services (Amazon Simple Email Service), to send emails such as request receipts, replies, confirmation codes and listing update notices
- Our email provider (to receive your messages at our support address)
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people's safety, or as part of a merger or sale of the business (in which case this policy would continue to apply). We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Where information is stored
Our servers are located in the Republic of Korea (South Korea). Information we collect, including messages, advertising applications and access logs, is stored and processed there. It is also processed by Stripe in the United States (advertising payments and sales tax), by Amazon Web Services in the United States (sending email to you) and by Cloudflare (network delivery, security, file storage and form checks), which may process it in the United States and other countries where it operates. Privacy laws in those countries may differ from the laws where you live. We protect the information as described in this policy wherever it is processed.
Consumer health data
Some laws, such as Washington's My Health My Data Act and similar laws in Nevada and Connecticut, treat the fact that someone looked up health care services as consumer health data. We do not want that information, so we limit what we keep:
- On health pages (hospitals, emergency rooms, nursing homes, medical and dental practices, pharmacies, drugs and health statistics), our access and security logs, which include IP addresses, record only the section of the Site (for example, "/medical-practices"), not the specific provider, drug or place you viewed. Our own page view counts are kept only as daily totals per page, with no IP address or other identifier.
- For those pages we send Google Analytics only the section, not the full page address or title.
- "Near me" locations stay in your browser and are never sent to us with a health search.
- We do not sell consumer health data, share it for advertising, or use it to target ads. Ads on health pages are matched only to the topic and area of the page.
- We do not ask for health information in our forms, and we delete any that is sent to us when we handle the request.
You can ask us to confirm, access or delete any consumer health data we hold about you, or withdraw consent, using the contact details below. We will respond within 45 days.
Public records about people
Some public data we republish names individuals, for example health care providers listed in the federal NPI registry. This information is already public. If you are listed and would like your listing hidden or corrected on our Site, use Remove or Correct My Info. We will hide it and keep it hidden when we refresh our data.
Your choices and rights
Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information. We do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of. If you want to make a request anyway, email us and we will confirm it in writing.
Global Privacy Control (GPC) and other opt-out preference signals. We treat a GPC signal, or any other legally recognized opt-out preference signal sent by your browser or extension, as a valid request to opt out of the sale and sharing of your personal information and of targeted advertising for that browser. When we receive it, we do not load Google Analytics and we do not keep the return-visit date described above. You do not need to do anything else.
Access, correction and deletion. Depending on your state (including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon and others with comprehensive privacy laws), you may have the right to know what personal information we hold about you, get a copy, correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email [email protected] or use our contact form. We will verify your request using the email address involved, reply within 45 days, and will not treat you differently for using your rights. You may use an authorized agent. If we deny your request, you can appeal by replying to our decision. As privacy laws allow, we may keep information we need for security and to prevent fraud or abuse, such as access logs, even after a deletion request.
Do Not Track. Browsers' "Do Not Track" setting has no agreed meaning, so we rely on Global Privacy Control instead.
Personal information categories (CCPA)
| Category | Collected? | Source and purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Identifiers (name, email, phone) | Only if you send them | You; to reply and handle requests |
| Professional information (your role at a business), proof photos | Only if you ask to update a business listing | You; to confirm you can speak for the business. Proof photos are deleted as soon as we finish the review (or after 60 days), and the request record six months after we finish it |
| Online identifiers (IP address) | Yes, in access and security logs | Your browser or device and Cloudflare; security, bot blocking, abuse prevention and fixing problems |
| Commercial information | Advertisers only | You and Stripe; billing and records |
| Internet activity | Yes: aggregate statistics, and access logs of pages requested | Your browser or device; site statistics and security |
| Geolocation | Approximate (city) only, not stored with identifiers | Cloudflare; local content |
| Sensitive personal information | No | |
| Consumer health data | No. Health pages are logged by section only | See Consumer health data |
Cookies and local storage
We do not use advertising cookies. These are all the cookies and browser storage items the Site uses. Most visitors only ever get the first group and, unless they send a GPC signal, the Google Analytics cookies.
| Name | Type and lifetime | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| theme | Cookie and local storage, 1 year | Remembers light or dark mode, only if you choose one. |
| du_notice | Cookie, 1 year (shared with our subdomains) | Remembers that you pressed OK on our first-visit notice about our Terms of Use, Privacy Policy and data accuracy, so it is not shown again. It contains only the date you pressed OK. If you close the notice with the Escape key instead, we remember that only until you close the tab (session storage key du:notice). |
| du_pass | Cookie, 12 hours | Security: shows that your browser already passed our automated-traffic check, so you are not checked again on every page. It contains a signed timestamp, not an identifier. |
| promo_m | Cookie, up to 30 days | Remembers which site notices or sponsored pop-ups you closed or chose not to see again, and when one was last shown, so they are not repeated. |
| promo_s | Cookie, until you close the browser | Remembers which notices were shown during this visit. |
| promo:* (for example promo:tk, promo:pop, promo:first) | Local and session storage | Older copies of the notice memory above, whether the top notice bar has content, which notices you hid, and the date of your first visit (so a pop-up is not shown on your very first page). |
| du:lv | Local storage | The date of your last visit, to tell first visits from return visits in our own statistics. It never leaves your device and is not used under GPC. |
| _ga, _ga_* | Cookies set by Google, up to 2 years | Google Analytics traffic measurement. Not set when your browser sends a GPC signal. |
| Cloudflare Turnstile | Set by Cloudflare on forms only | Checks that a form was sent by a person. See Cloudflare's privacy policy. |
| Session storage | Until you close the tab | Keeps your scroll position when you go back, and retries a page once after an error. |
| du:ss | Session storage, until you close the tab | A random code that links searches made in the same tab, so we can learn common misspellings and related searches. We store only a daily scrambled version of it. Not used under GPC. |
| adm, admin_lang | Cookies, staff only | Sign-in and language for our own administrators. Never set for visitors. |
You can delete cookies and local storage in your browser settings at any time. The Site works without them, but your preferences will be forgotten.
How long we keep information
- Access and security logs (IP address, user agent, pages requested, time) and records of blocked IP addresses: kept with no fixed deletion date, because automated scrapers and attackers often return months later and older records help us recognize them. We delete them once they are no longer needed for security, bot blocking or abuse prevention. A blocked address stays blocked until we lift the block.
- Daily visit counts and site search totals: kept as totals; the daily random value used for unique counts is deleted after two days.
- Individual site searches: 90 days. Daily search totals: 2 years. Common misspellings learned from searches (word pairs only): until we remove them.
- Messages and requests: up to 3 years after we close them, then deleted.
- Advertising and payment records: 7 years, for tax and accounting.
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe.
Children
The Site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has sent us personal information, email us and we will delete it.
Security
We use encryption in transit (HTTPS), limit who can access our systems, and keep the amount of personal information we hold as small as possible. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We will post any changes on this page and update the date at the top. If we make a significant change, we will post a notice on the Site before it takes effect.
