Frequently asked questions

Which cities' restaurant inspections are covered?
We publish health inspection results from New York City, NY; Chicago, IL; Austin, TX; Cincinnati, OH; Prince George's County, MD, covering 55,377 food businesses inspected in the last three years.
How do restaurant health inspections work?
Local health inspectors make unannounced visits to restaurants and other food businesses, usually one to three times a year. They check food temperatures, hand washing, pests, cleanliness and storage, and record any violations of the food code.
What happens when a restaurant fails an inspection?
The health department schedules a follow-up inspection to check that the problems were fixed. Serious risks, such as no hot water or a pest infestation, can lead to an immediate closure until the business passes a re-inspection.
Are inspection systems the same everywhere?
No. New York City posts letter grades based on violation points, Chicago rates each inspection Pass, Pass with Conditions or Fail, and Austin uses a 100-point score. Compare results within one city, not across cities.
