Frequently asked questions

What is in this catalog?
Descriptions of 473,038 open datasets published by federal agencies through Data.gov and by state, county and city governments on their own open data portals. Each listing says who publishes the data, how often it changes and where to get it.
Can I download the data here?
Every download, API and map link goes straight to the official government source, so you always get the current version and its terms of use. DatenUS does not copy or change the files.
Is government data free to use?
Most federal data is in the public domain. State and local portals usually allow free reuse under an open license or their terms of use. Each dataset page shows the license when the publisher lists one.
How often is the catalog updated?
We check Data.gov and each state and local portal every day for new and changed datasets, and run a full recheck every month to drop datasets that were taken down.
Why is a dataset I need missing?
Some agencies only publish data on their own websites. We add new government portals as we find them. If a portal is missing, let us know through the contact page.
