Frequently asked questions

Which agency handles which recalls?
The FDA oversees most food, drugs, medical devices and cosmetics. The USDA handles meat, poultry and egg products. The CPSC covers consumer products like toys and furniture, and NHTSA covers vehicles, tires and car seats.
Are recalls voluntary?
Most recalls are started voluntarily by the company, often after talks with the agency. Agencies can also request or order a recall when a company does not act.
How do I find out if something I own is recalled?
Search the recall lists on this page by product, brand or firm, then compare model numbers, lot codes or UPCs with your product. For vehicles, check your VIN with the vehicle recall lookup.
