What the AQI means

The U.S. Air Quality Index runs from 0 to 500. Higher means more pollution.

  • 0-50Good. Air quality is satisfactory and poses little or no risk.
  • 51-100Moderate. Acceptable. A few unusually sensitive people may have symptoms.
  • 101-150Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens should limit long or heavy outdoor exertion.
  • 151-200Unhealthy. Everyone may begin to feel effects. Sensitive groups should avoid long or heavy outdoor exertion.
  • 201-300Very Unhealthy. Health alert: the risk of health effects is increased for everyone.
  • 301-500Hazardous. Health warning of emergency conditions. Everyone is more likely to be affected.

Each monitor reports separate values for ozone and fine particles (PM2.5), and the AQI shown is the highest of them. Wildfire smoke mostly raises PM2.5; summer afternoons mostly raise ozone.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good AQI?
An AQI of 0 to 50 is good and 51 to 100 is moderate. Above 100, air is unhealthy for sensitive groups such as children, older adults and people with heart or lung disease.
What should I do when the AQI is high?
Limit time and heavy exercise outdoors, keep windows closed, run air conditioning on recirculate or an air purifier, and consider a N95 mask outside during smoke events.
Where does this data come from?
Readings come from EPA's AirNow program, which collects hourly data from state, local and tribal air monitoring agencies. The data are preliminary and can change.
