Frequently asked questions
- What is a Supreme Court term?
- The Court's term begins on the first Monday in October and is named for that year. The October Term 2024, for example, began in October 2024 and most of its opinions were released by the end of June 2025.
- What does per curiam mean?
- A per curiam opinion is an opinion of the Court that is not signed by any one Justice. The Court often uses it for short decisions issued without full briefing and argument.
- Is a slip opinion final?
- No. Slip opinions are the first version the Court releases. They can be corrected before they appear in the bound United States Reports, which is the official, final text.
