Vehicle miles traveled are FHWA estimates built from about 5,000 continuous traffic counting stations that states operate, expanded to all public roads. The latest month is preliminary and is revised in the next month's report; percent changes compare the same month a year earlier. Where a state reported no stations, FHWA estimates its travel from nearby states or the national trend.

Frequently asked questions

What is vehicle miles traveled (VMT)?
VMT is the total number of miles driven by all vehicles on public roads in an area during a period. FHWA estimates it from continuous traffic counters and uses it to track travel trends.
Why do the numbers change after a month?
Each report gives preliminary figures for the latest month and revised figures for the month before. This site keeps the revised value when it is available.
