Frequently asked questions

What is a WARN notice?
The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires most employers with 100 or more workers to give 60 days notice before a plant closing or mass layoff. Notices go to the workers, the state workforce agency and local officials. Some states, such as California, have their own stricter WARN laws.
Does a notice mean the layoff happened?
Not always. Employers sometimes reduce, delay or cancel layoffs after filing, and the number of workers in a notice is the employer's estimate at the time.
Where can laid-off workers get help?
State workforce agencies offer rapid response services, unemployment benefits and job training. Find your state's agency at careeronestop.org.
