Frequently asked questions

Where do these numbers come from?
Each city or county publishes its own records on an official open data portal. DatenUS asks each portal to count its records by month, type and area, and shows those counts. We do not copy individual records, names or caller details.
Can I compare crime between cities?
Not directly. Cities count reports differently: some count every offense in a report, some count incidents, and some include non-crime calls. Population and policing also differ. Use these pages to see trends within one city, and see the FBI crime statistics pages for rates.
Why is my city missing?
We add cities whose portals publish these records in a form that can be counted automatically. More cities will be added over time.
