Frequently asked questions

What are the largest Asian American groups in the U.S.?
By people reporting a single Asian group, the largest are Indian Americans (4,625,449), Chinese Americans (4,284,036), Filipino Americans (3,039,204), Vietnamese Americans (1,918,848).
What are the largest Hispanic and Latino origin groups?
Mexican Americans (37,921,535), Puerto Ricans (5,965,360), Cuban Americans (2,593,343), Salvadoran Americans (2,583,416) are the largest Hispanic or Latino origin groups.
How are these communities counted?
We use the American Community Survey 5-year estimates. Asian groups count people who reported one Asian group alone, Hispanic origin groups come from the Hispanic or Latino origin question, and European, Middle Eastern, African and Caribbean groups come from the ancestry question, where people may list up to two ancestries.
Do these rankings show neighborhoods like Koreatown or Little Italy?
No. Rankings are by city, county and state, not by named neighborhood. Many cities have neighborhoods with these names, but their boundaries are not official Census areas.
