Frequently asked questions
- How many new homes were permitted in the last 12 months?
- 1,418,086 new housing units were authorized in the U.S. from Sep 2025 to Aug 2026, including 888,241 single-family homes and 477,733 units in buildings with five or more units.
- Which states issue the most building permits for their size?
- Relative to population, the most new homes were authorized in Idaho (9.5 per 1,000 people), South Carolina (8.8 per 1,000 people), North Carolina (8.2 per 1,000 people).
- What does a building permit count mean?
- The Census Bureau counts new privately owned housing units authorized by building permits. A permit is not a finished home: some projects start months later and a few never start. Remodels and nonresidential buildings are not included.
- Why are some counties missing?
- Places without a local permit office are not covered, and some areas report only once a year. Census fills in estimates for permit offices that did not report in a given month.
