Frequently asked questions

What do extremely low, very low and low income mean?
HUD sets three income limits for each area. Extremely low income is generally 30% of the area median, very low income is 50% and low income is 80%, adjusted for household size and, in some areas, for high housing costs or low incomes. Programs such as Housing Choice Vouchers, public housing and many tax credit apartments use these limits to decide who qualifies.
Which income counts?
Programs count the gross annual income of everyone in the household, before taxes. Each program has its own rules about what counts, so check with the housing agency or property.
